This topic will only be of interest to a select few, but it was definitely helpful for me so I thought that I would pass it along.
If you have parents born in Hong Kong, but you were born after they had emigrated elsewhere, you may still be eligible to receive a Hong Kong identification card that gives you the right to live, work or study in Hong Kong without any limitations. That means that you do no need a visa to stay in Hong Kong, or to have a company sponsor your work visa if you wish to work there.
The topic is quite complicated and many conditions will determine whether you are eligible for Right of Abode (full citizen), Right to Land, or no rights to either. I was always confused with the information I had heard on this topic much of which has been wrong. I think this website here does a very good job explaining what the requirements are and will help you on your way if you qualify.
I’m currently in the process of applying for my Right to Land. I may or may not ever end up living and working in Hong Kong but by doing the paperwork now, if the opportunity ever arises I will be ready. Plus it never hurts to have options.
